TEXAS VETERANS HOME - Vovmc NOMAD 2001-2026

The VOV met in Floresville, Texas for a get-together some time back.  Some came from the Corpus Christi area.  Prospects came down from the Hill Country to meet in San Antonio and they rode to meet up in Floresville.  We also had a ceremony at a very nice, secluded part of the City Park on the river for a patch in.
After the ceremony, we all rode over the Texas Veteran's Home.  This is the largest Veteran's Home in Texas with about 150 residents.  Prior arrangements had been made and they were expecting us.  The staff met us as we rode in and escorted us to a dining room where we were served lunch with several of the residents.  After lunch we were taken around to the various day rooms and were able to talk to and visit with many of the residents.  These Heroes are from WWII, Korea, and the Viet Nam War.
The support and cooperation of the staff was amazing.  All were very helpful and appreciative that we had come to see their Heroes.  The home was the cleanest, nicest rest home I had ever seen. The residents, themselves, were universally glad to see us and have someone to talk with.  We had all gathered small give-aways from various recruiters in San Antonio and Corpus Christi and there was plenty of stuff to give to the Heroes.  Even the ones that couldn't speak were able to tell us with their eyes that they appreciated our visit.  One fellow had been with Patton in Africa and when I asked him if George was as nice and gentle a guy as I had heard, all he did was laugh.  (I took that as a no).  Another had served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.  Now that's a military career.
When we gathered to leave and were talking in the parking lot every one of us admitted that, even considering how glad the Veterans were to see us, we received much more than we gave.  It was a powerful experience and one I would encourage all Brothers to try.  We will definitely schedule another visit.

WELCOME HOME

In late 2006, Mad Jack requested one last change and it was granted. An In Memory Patch on the rear bottom for Brothers gone but not forgotten as we are a dying breed of Veteran was added to the colors he designed. {Adding the In Memory patch to the rear bottom of the colors was a specific design choice by Mad Jack to ensure that fallen brothers are literally "carried" by those still riding.} It isn't a general memorial for the war, but a specific tribute to the club's own fallen members. While the center patch (the map and dates) honors all who served in the Vietnam era, the "IN MEMORY" patch is deeply personal to the club's internal brotherhood. Honoring "Gone But Not Forgotten" Brothers. The "Sunset" Nature of our Club: Because the VoVMC is a "legacy" club (meaning our membership is restricted to veterans of a specific historical era), our members are acutely aware that numbers are naturally declining. The "IN MEMORY" patch is a way of "bringing the brothers along" on every ride, ensuring the lineage of the club remains visible until the very last member hangs up his vest! A "Living Memorial": In the MC world, your vest (your "cut") is your life story. By placing this on the back, near our colors, the club signals to the public and other MCs that they prioritize loyalty to their dead as much as their living. Why on the Back? In MC culture, the back of the vest is reserved for the most "sacred" items, the club's name, their center patch, and their location. It is a position of the highest honor, reserved for those who remained loyal to the brotherhood until the end. We are a 3 piece patch MC.
